Seasons and water

Reading the Zambezi Water Level

Water level, not the weather, decides which activities run. Learn how it moves through the year and check it before you commit to anything on the river.

Why the level changes

Rainfall far upstream in Angola and Zambia takes months to reach Victoria Falls, so the river peaks around April and bottoms out around October or November.

  • The falls sit in a rain shadow, so a dry day here says nothing about the water in front of you.
  • Levels move week by week rather than month by month — treat any calendar as a guide, not a promise.
  • Operators test conditions daily, which is why they can tell you on the morning whether a trip runs.
2

Low water, September to December

The river retreats into channels over bare rock and the gorge opens up, which is exactly why the adventurous activities peak now.

  • White-water rafting runs the low-water stretch and is at its best.
  • Devil's Pool and Livingstone Island swims usually operate on guided trips.
  • The falls break into separate channels — less volume, more geology and drama.
  • The gorge climb in and out is at its hardest in the heat; start early and carry water.

Medium water, June to August and January

The balanced months: a strong curtain of water with the gorge still partly in view, and most river activities running.

  • This is the sweet spot for travellers who want both the falls and the activities.
  • June to August is high season, so book accommodation and flights early.
  • January is the quiet version of the same balance, with green scenery and lower prices.
  • Expect spray at the viewpoints, but not the full whiteout of the flood months.
4

High water, February to May

Maximum power, heaviest spray, and the season when some of the river calendar simply stops.

  • Devil's Pool closes and white-water rafting is usually suspended, sometimes moving to a lower section.
  • Sunset cruises continue on the calmer stretches of the Zambezi.
  • Flights over the falls give you the only clear view when the mist hides the gorge.
  • Rainforest walks are spectacular but soaking — full waterproofing all round.
5

Always confirm before you book

Anything that happens on or near the water depends on the river, so treat the month as a probability rather than a guarantee.

  • Ask the operator directly what is running the week you arrive.
  • Keep a fallback activity in mind for the same day — flights and cultural visits rarely depend on water.
  • Members posting from the falls in the feed are usually the fastest real-time answer.
  • Build one flexible day into any trip planned around a single river activity.

Planning around this

Water levels and weather shift week by week, so treat the seasons here as a guide. Members posting from the falls can tell you what is actually happening this week.
