Seasonal Tips: What Each Window Gives You

Victoria Falls is a year-round destination, but the season you pick decides what you will actually see and do. Here is each window in plain terms.

High water, February to May

The Zambezi is in flood and the falls run at full power — the loudest, wettest, most dramatic version of the curtain.

  • Expect to be soaked at most viewpoints; the spray reaches hundreds of metres back from the edge.
  • Devil's Pool closes and rafting is normally suspended at peak flow.
  • The gorge is often hidden behind the mist, so you see volume rather than depth.
  • Rain eases through April and May, with fewer visitors than mid-year and green rainforest.
2

Cool and clear, June to August

The most comfortable months of the year and the best all-round viewing: dry days, cold mornings and a gorge that opens back up as the spray lifts.

  • Around 24-27°C by day, dropping to 5-10°C at sunrise — layers matter.
  • The best season of the year for wildlife in Zambezi National Park, Chobe and Hwange.
  • Low-water rafting begins in the second half of the season as the river drops.
  • This is high season: book lodges, flights and activities well ahead.

Hot and dry, September to October

The classic low-water season, when the falls split into channels over bare rock and the heat is at its fiercest.

  • Daytime temperatures reach 33-38°C and October is usually the hottest month.
  • Devil's Pool and Livingstone Island normally run through these months, always with a licensed guide.
  • White-water rafting is at its best on the low-water run, and the gorge climb is at its hardest.
  • Wildlife crowds the river and waterholes, so game drives and canoe safaris are excellent.
4

Green season, November to January

The rains return, the bush turns green, the spray rebuilds and the crowds thin out — the quietest and best-value time to be here.

  • Short, heavy afternoon storms between December and February, usually followed by sun.
  • Days of 30-33°C and humid, with dramatic cloudscapes and the best light of the year.
  • Lodges and activities cost less and the viewpoints are calm.
  • Mosquitoes are active too — repellent, long sleeves and a travel clinic chat about prophylaxis.
5

Shoulder-season value

May and November sit between the peaks: still strong water or wildlife, without the July crowds or the October heat.

  • May gives you power in the falls with spray starting to clear — excellent value.
  • November brings green shoots and low-season prices as the river starts rising.
  • Both months are easier to book at short notice than June to August.
  • Shoulder months are the ones to watch if you want a flexible itinerary.

Planning around this

Water levels and weather shift week by week, so treat the seasons here as a guide. Members posting from the falls can tell you what is actually happening this week.

Reading the Zambezi Water Level

Water level, not the weather, decides which activities run. Learn how it moves through the year and check it before you commit to anything on the river.
