Culture, Craft and Food

Victoria Falls is a living town, not just a waterfall. Where to meet the people who live here, what to buy, and what to eat while you do it.

Craft markets and fair prices

The curio markets beside the falls sell carvings, textiles and jewellery made locally, and the trading is part of the experience.

  • Bargaining is normal and friendly, but keep it fair — the difference is small to you and large to the maker.
  • Buy directly from makers where you can, rather than through a middleman.
  • Ask before photographing stalls, sellers or their work.
  • Cash in small notes settles everything faster than a card.

Village visits and photography

Mukuni and other villages near town welcome visitors through organised tours that pay the community directly.

  • Go with a local guide and ask before entering any compound or photographing people.
  • Dress modestly, and treat homes as homes rather than exhibits.
  • Buying a craft is a more useful contribution than a tip handed out of a car window.
  • Ask questions about school, farming and daily life — that is what the visits are for.

What to eat

The town does game meat, river fish and a strong local plate for travellers who want more than a buffet.

  • Try a Boma dinner and drum show for a full evening of Zimbabwean food and music.
  • Tiger fish and bream from the Zambezi are the local specialities worth ordering.
  • Sadza with relish, greens and stew is the everyday plate — ask for it and you will get the real thing.
  • Vegetarian options exist but are thinner outside lodges; ask ahead at smaller kitchens.

Music and evenings

Evenings centre on the river, the drum shows and the easygoing bars of the town centre.

  • Sunset cruises double as the most popular evening out, with drinks and river views.
  • Drum and dance performances at the cultural villages are loud, warm and genuinely good.
  • Live music and markets pick up around weekends in the town centre.
  • Keep an eye on time at night — arrange your ride home rather than finding one after dark.

Planning around this

Water levels and weather shift week by week, so treat the seasons here as a guide. Members posting from the falls can tell you what is actually happening this week.
