Your First Trip to Victoria Falls

What to book before you fly, what you can decide once you are here, and how to shape the first 48 hours so the falls themselves are not the only thing you see.

How long you actually need

Two full days covers the rainforest walk and one big river activity without rushing. Four days lets you add Chobe or Hwange and still have an afternoon doing nothing at all.

  • Day one: the falls themselves, on foot, early. Nothing else needs to compete with that.
  • Day two: one water or air activity — rafting, a sunset cruise or a flight over the gorge.
  • Day three onward: a day trip to Chobe, Hwange or the surrounding villages.
  • A half-day visit is possible and genuinely worth it if the falls are a stop on a longer trip.

Book before you fly

High season between June and August fills lodges and the popular activity slots weeks ahead. A few things are worth locking in early.

  • Accommodation for June to August, and anything over a holiday weekend.
  • White-water rafting, helicopter and microlight flights, and Devil's Pool in low water.
  • Your visa or e-visa if you are not eligible for a visa on arrival.
  • Travel insurance that names rafting and flights as covered activities, not exclusions.

Leave until you arrive

Plenty of the best parts of a Victoria Falls trip only work once you can see the river level and the weather for yourself.

  • Sunset cruises: a day or two ahead is usually enough, and you can pick a clear evening.
  • Guided rainforest walks — you can walk in with the licensed guides at the entrance.
  • Craft market shopping and the curio stalls, which need no planning at all.
  • Restaurant tables and the Boma dinner, which take a phone call rather than a month.

Your first morning in town

Start at the falls entrance as early as it opens. The light is best, the spray is at its thinnest, and you will have the viewpoints half to yourself.

  • Wear shoes with tread and carry a dry bag — the rainforest path is wet year round.
  • Walk the full circuit from the Devil's Cataract end through to the bridge viewpoint.
  • Hire a guide at the gate if you want the geology and the history, not just the photographs.
  • Have a late breakfast afterwards and leave the afternoon free while your body adjusts to the heat.

Planning around this

Water levels and weather shift week by week, so treat the seasons here as a guide. Members posting from the falls can tell you what is actually happening this week.
