Adventure Guidebook: What Runs When

The Batoka Gorge is the setting for rafting, bungee and one of the world's great gorge swings. What each activity involves, and which season suits it.

White-water rafting

The Zambezi below the falls is one of the great rafting runs, with big rapids, warm water and a steep climb out of the gorge.

  • Rapid numbers 1 to 19 run through the day, with a lunch stop on the rocks mid-river.
  • Some rapids are portaged at certain levels — ask how many you will actually run.
  • Low water, roughly August to December, is the classic season; the climb out is the hardest part.
  • You need to be reasonably fit, able to swim, and prepared for a full day in the sun.

Flights over the falls

When the spray hides the gorge from the ground, an aircraft is the only way to see the whole 1.7 km curtain and the zigzag of the canyon.

  • Fixed-wing and microlight flights give a slower, more open view; helicopters cover it quickly.
  • Flights run in all seasons and operate whenever visibility allows.
  • Morning flights usually give the clearest air and the lowest wind.
  • Take a flight in high water to see the full curtain, and in low water to see the gorge structure.

Bungee, gorge swing and zip line

The Victoria Falls Bridge and the gorge rim host the adrenaline side of town, all of it looking straight down into the Batoka Gorge.

  • Bungee from the bridge is around 111 m above the river, with a harness check before you step out.
  • The gorge swing and zip line suit people who want the view without the freefall.
  • These run year round and rarely depend on river level.
  • Book for early morning if you also want the bridge's own history walk in cooler air.

Devil's Pool and Livingstone Island

In low water, guided trips cross to Livingstone Island and let you swim in a natural pool a few feet from the lip of the falls.

  • It is only open roughly August to January, and only when the river is low enough.
  • You always go with a licensed guide, and the walk out into the current is taken slowly.
  • Not recommended for children, weak swimmers or anyone uneasy in moving water.
  • Combine it with the falls walk from the Zambian side for a completely different view.

What runs when

Use the river level as your guide, and keep one flexible day in the plan for whichever activity you care about most.

  • High water, February to May: flights, cruises, bridge activities and cultural trips.
  • Medium water, June to August and January: almost everything, including rafting in the second half.
  • Low water, September to December: rafting, Devil's Pool and gorge activities at their peak.
  • Confirm all of it with the operator in the week you arrive — levels move weekly.

Planning around this

Water levels and weather shift week by week, so treat the seasons here as a guide. Members posting from the falls can tell you what is actually happening this week.
